Nov. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- SAVAGE, LAKEVILLE AND PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA - Halloween will be here before we know it and and Prior Lake orthodontics specialist Dr. Trudy Bonvino was preparing by making sure patients had information on safe candies to chow down on that won't damage parts of braces.

There are several types of candy that can break or bend wires, loosen bands or cause brackets to come loose, said Bonvino,  Prior Lake orthodontics expert (http://www.cosmoortho.com/), who specializes in orthodontics for adults and children at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics.

"Nearly all chocolates, as well as anything that is soft, yet not sticky, is OK to eat," Bonvino said. "It goes without saying that any Minneapolis dentistry (http://www.cosmoortho.com/faq.php) or orthodontic professional will also make sure you remember to brush and floss after eating any candy."

A type of candy that braces wearers can consume are chocolate bars, M&Ms or other candy-coated chocolates, chocolate candy containing crisped rice, chocolate covered nougat bars, and soft candies including butter mints.

Because lots of Halloween and fall festivals are held at churches and community centers nowadays, fresh-baked goods are popular treats, Bonvino said. Homemade cookies, fudge and brownies are fine to eat for those with braces, as long as they don't have nuts.

The American Association of Orthodontists' website has a list of braces-friendly recipes parents and kids can prepare, including a dessert section. Foods include pumpkin cake, cake-mix cookies, berry tasty muffins and super strawberry bars, to name a few

Some candies should not be eaten by those wearing braces (http://www.cosmoortho.com/types-of-braces.php) or fixed retainers, Bonvino said.

Hard or sticky candy is detrimental when it comes to orthodontics. They have the ability to break or bend wires, damage brackets and make bands come loose.
