The reason why most people are not living the way they want to live is because they tie themselves down with certain misconceptions. You’re probably guilty of believing that you will never get anywhere unless you have, at the very least, a Master’s degree. You may also subscribe to the idea that your dream life is something that your family would definitely approve of. It’s also possible that you think pursuing an ideal life is a purely selfish act.
The fact is, your life is yours. Nobody can tell you what to do with it, no matter how strongly established certain ideas of a “good” life are. What is good to others isn’t necessarily good for you. Furthermore, you only have one life to live. Why waste it doing things you don’t want to do? Why waste it experiencing things that you don’t find particularly appealing?
The key, then, is to open your mind. Stop thinking about how the life you’re living now is necessary and cannot be changed. Your dream life is there for the taking, but you have to want to take it in the first place. So, ponder over the obstacles you’ve placed between yourself and the life you want and think about how to overcome them. If they can be conquered just by dismissing them, then well and good. If they can only be conquered through certain actions, what’s stopping you from doing these actions?
It may seem difficult to drop your pursuit of a PhD, or to defy your parents’ expectations, or to even consider yourself someone worthy of a great life, but you have to. You have to if you want to stop living a bland and maybe even miserable existence. Getting your dream life won’t be a piece of cake, but it is very much a possibility, and you would be a fool not to pursue it.
