Awards for Port Arthur’s conservation and sustainability

Fresh from being named Tasmania’s Best Major Tourism Attraction at the recent Tasmanian Tourism Awards, the Port Arthur Historic Site has received more plaudits.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 23, 2011 - Fresh from being named Tasmania’s Best Major Tourism Attraction at the recent Tasmanian Tourism Awards, the Port Arthur Historic Site has received more plaudits.

The Historic Site received two Awards for Excellence from the Interpretation Australia Association (IAA), announced at its annual conference in Perth, Western Australia, last week.

IAA’s Gold Award was presented for the conservation and interpretation of the Separate Prison. PAHSMA also picked up  the Association’s Silver Award for its innovative Education Program.

IAA is a not-for-profit national membership-based organisation dedicated to the advancement of the profession of cultural and natural heritage interpretation.
The Separate Prison, which is in the final stages of a long-term conservation project, was also the focus of one of several awards presented to the Port Arthur Historic Site by the Keep Australia Beautiful Committee in its Tidy Towns awards, which was given an Award for Excellence in a Tourism Experience.

Other Awards for Excellence were presented to Port Arthur by the Keep Australia Beautiful Committee for its environmental and sustainability initiatives, including the site’s energy efficiency measures and fire suppression project.

Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority Chairman Dr Barry Jones said the awards were a tribute to the organisation’s staff, particularly at a time when the domestic tourism downturn presented them with many challenges.

“Not only has our team worked incredibly hard to cope with the drop in visitor numbers, particularly through the winter, they have also continued to work on these important, long-term strategic projects that mean so much, for the visitor experience and for the Site’s long-term cultural significance and environmental sustainability,” said Dr Jones.

“I know that the staff appreciate these awards, especially when times are tough.”

The Historic Site’s win in the Tasmanian Tourism Awards enter it into the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, to be announced next March in Cairns.
