SWFAS IS AWARDED $13,675
FROM FOULDS FOUNDATION

FORT MYERS, FLA., November 23, 2011 - The Claiborne and Ned Foulds Foundation has awarded a $13,675 grant to Southwest Florida Addiction Services (SWFAS) to purchase new technology that will enable SWFAS to treat more people in need of substance abuse treatment.
The grant will be used to purchase four SMART Boards, a new tool that resembles a white board, but includes computer capability allowing users to access files and the Internet, send email and create documents using digital ink. By installing the SMART Boards at four SWFAS locations, counselors can conduct simultaneous group counseling sessions linked together through videoconferencing with one clinician instead of four.  The SMART boards are fully interactive and anyone can write on the boards from any location.
The SMART Boards also will be used by the SWFAS Prevention Department, which works with 1,000 school children to help them learn behaviors free of alcohol and drugs.
“We are very grateful to the Advisory Board of the Foulds Foundation for recognizing the importance of providing resources to support prevention and treatment of residents with the chronic disease of addiction, which impacts one in five people in our community,” said SWFAS CEO Kevin B. Lewis.
The SMART Boards will be installed at the Cape Coral facility of SWFAS, the Transitional Living Center on Grand Avenue and two at the Detoxification and Outpatient Treatment Center on Evans Avenue in Fort Myers.
Installation is expected to be completed in January.
SWFAS is Southwest Florida’s leader in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.   More than 6,000 people per year, from ages 9 to 90, start on the road to recovery with the nationally-acclaimed programs of SWFAS.  SWFAS offers state-of-the-art residential and outpatient facilities for both adults and adolescents from five locations in Lee County and two in Hendry County.  In addition, SWFAS provides detoxification services for adults, prevention programming, and an Employee Assistance Program for about 50 Southwest Florida businesses.  All treatment programs are evidence-based and accredited by CARF.
SWFAS services are not free.  Payment plans are available and, in many cases, private insurance may cover some of the cost of treatment.  Some prevention and treatment services are partially supported by Lee County and state funding to help income-eligible residents.  SWFAS is a United Way agency.
