NYC Custom Closet Builder Says Winter a Perfect Time to Get Closet Organization in Order

Custom closet building company says with approaching holidays and colder weather meaning more time indoors, winter is a great time to get things in order

Nov. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK CITY – The cooler months present an ideal opportunity to get our closet organization in order and clean out everything you don't need, said Norbert Twardoski, owner of The Closet Builder, an NYC custom closet building company.

“Winter affords the opportunity to obtain a new wardrobe, so it is maybe a far better period to get your storage area in order, ” Twardoski said. “With all of your brand new purchases, you'll want a storage area solution that will offer easy access to all you need to stow. ”

Twardoski suggested the following tips to help you get your closet in order.

Create a plan for your closet organization
“Lay out whatever you prefer to accomplish. Determine what you're going to do with the clothes you no longer want. If you're going to install a storage system, come up with a diagram of what you want it to look like, and what will go where. Doing this before anything else will keep you concentrated, and you won't have to stress about the work you will end up undertaking. ”

Don't go for the obvious
“It's great to have your own master bedroom closet, but think of what could be done if you and your wife used one to hang clothes, and used the other for shelving. The latter closet could contain all the folded clothes, shoes and accessories, making finding things easier for the both of you. Closet organization shouldn't be about what others do, but what works for you and your family. ”

Use shelving space
“There are plenty of dividers on the market to create separate sections for clothing, shoes and accessories. Use the space over your hanging rack, and if you have room above your current shelf, then add another one instead of stacking higher. Items like shoes and handbags are easier to find on higher shelves as opposed to ones at eye level. ”

Make sure you have proper closet lighting
“We sometimes neglect to change out burned out light bulbs, and instead of a well lit closet, we look in the dark. Items can get easily lost and remain not found. With proper lighting, however, items can be seen easier and the closet can be used more efficiently. Plus, natural sunlight can fade clothes. ”

Put seasonal items together
“Have you whittled down your clothes and accessories, but still find yourself short on space? The rule of thumb is, ‘If you have too little space, you have too much stuff. ’ You might have to resort to a seasonal system, switching out articles depending on what the weather's like. Easy ways to do this include put out-of-season clothes on a covered clothing rack or in flat storage boxes, and keeping this in the attic or basement. ”

“Cleaning out your closet will reduce stress, as you'll be able to find what you want more quickly and efficiently, ” Twardoski said. “Keeping good storage habits means you won't have to do this every season, so ensure proper storage order. ”
