Nov. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- BIG ARTS Film Society offers a comedy, a drama, and an award-winning documentary for its Monday Night Film Series in December. All films are $8 and begin at 7 p.m. in Schein Performance Hall.
Viewers will enjoy the quality of a new Blu-ray Disc player and new high-definition projection equipment, installed this past summer. Assistive listening devices are available. Following each film, the tradition of refreshments and lively discussion led by a variety of local film aficionados and buffs will continue.
           December Monday Night films:

December 5     Potiche (2011) France; Rated R

December 12   Mother (2009) South Korea; Rated R

December 19   My Perestroika (2010) Russia; Not Rated

Set in 1977 in a provincial French town, Potiche is a loose adaptation of the 1970s eponymous hit comic play. The film stars Catherine Deneuve as Suzanne Pujol, a submissive “trophy wife” who steps in to manage an umbrella factory run by her wealthy and tyrannical husband. Suzanne proves to be a remarkably effective leader but when a former lover (played by Gérard Depardieu) arrives on the scene, matters soon become complicated. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian calls Potiche, “a tremendously elegant piece of fun.”
The latest film from award-winning Korean director Bong Joon-ho, Mother is a chilling murder mystery about a mother’s primal love for her son. Mother is a devoted single parent to her simple-minded 27-year-old son, Yoon Do-joon. In her obsessive quest to clear her son’s name in a murder case, Mother steps into a world of unimaginable terror and discovers shocking revelations. Mark Jenkins of NPR calls Mother, “a thriller Hitchcock would admire.”
My Perestroika is a documentary that follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times — from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. Dorothy Rabinowitz of The Wall Street Journal calls the film, “a work of such exhilarating depth and humor.”
BIG ARTS Monday Night Film Series is supported by Series Sponsor Bank Of The Islands and Stan & Visnja Gembicki, Supporters George & Wendy’s Corner Grill, Jerry’s Foods of Sanibel, Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory, and Sanibel Taxi.
