Nov. 18, 2011 - City of Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker recently issued a Proclamation honoring Newark-based Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) during the American Bar Association's "Celebrate Pro Bono 2011" in October. In the Proclamation, Booker applauds VLJ's efforts in ensuring equal justice for all by providing legal representation and advice to economically-

Mayor Booker's Proclamation recognizes how VLJ has aided thousands of clients each year with the help of more than 1,500 volunteer attorneys since its founding in 2001. The non-profit continues to develop innovative programs to aid its low-income clients, focusing on the areas of greatest need including bankruptcy, consumer law, family law and special education, among others. In addition, VLJ's ReLeSe program gives Essex County residents with criminal records a second chance by assisting them with the civil legal issues that often serve as barriers to successful community reintegration.

About Volunteer Lawyers for Justice: VLJ provides comprehensive legal services to economically-
disadvantaged adults, children, and families in New Jersey to ensure fair and equal treatment within the legal system. Programs include free legal counsel and advice, educational seminars on various legal matters, and direct representation for at-risk individuals facing critical civil legal issues. Established in 2001, VLJ has grown from a grass roots effort of 30 volunteer attorneys in Essex County to a state-wide 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation with six staff attorneys and more than 1,500 volunteer attorneys providing free legal services to thousands of clients each year.
