Liv Taylor Concert Kicks Off BIG ARTS 2011-2012 Live Jazz & Pop Season in Sanibel

BIG ARTS begins its Jazz & Pop season Sat., Nov. 26 with Livingston Taylor. The season’s line-up also includes The Mills Brothers, Joan Curto, Five By Design, Marilyn Maye, Riders in the Sky, Jim Van Slyke, David Pomeranz and Bay Street Brassworks.

Nov. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- BIG ARTS in Sanibel has announced its 2011-2012 Live Jazz & Pop season beginning this fall with a special Thanksgiving weekend performance by perennial island favorite Livingston Taylor, who will take the stage Saturday, November 26. The season’s line-up also includes The Mills Brothers (Jan. 14); Sassy, Brassy & Classy: The Songs of Ethel Merman and Mary Martin with Joan Curto (Jan. 19); Five By Design (Jan. 28); Marilyn Maye (Feb. 11); Riders in the Sky (Feb. 18); The Sedaka Show with Jim Van Slyke (Mar. 2); Chaplin: A Life in Concert with David Pomeranz (Mar. 9) and Bay Street Brassworks (Mar. 16). All shows begin at 8 p.m. at BIG ARTS Schein Hall, 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.

A virtuoso on guitar and piano, Taylor is the musician behind top 40 hits “I Will Be In Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running.” During the course of his esteemed career in music, he has collaborated with folk legends Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt and his brother, James, for whom Taylor wrote lyrics for the double Grammy® Award-winning album, Hourglass. Formed in the late 1920s by four brothers from Piqua, Ohio, The Mills Brothers are the recipients of a Grammy® Award for Lifetime Achievement and are best known for their hits “Tiger Rag,” “Cab Driver” and “Glow Worm.”

Curto comes to the island from Chicago, where the success of her one-woman show of classics from the celebrated catalogues of Broadway legends Ethel Merman and Mary Martin has earned her an After Dark Award for Outstanding Cabaret Artist. The Chicago Tribune calls Curto’s Sassy, Brassy & Classy “an uncommonly effective homage.”

Combining warm, well-rounded vocals with vintage fashion and a touch of comedy, Five By Design’s latest show, Cool and Swingin’, is set in the format of a radio broadcast and reflects on the career of group member and alto sax legend Richie Cole.

Maye returns to BIG ARTS by popular demand to entertain audiences with her amazing vocal dexterity and boundless energy. A recent New York Times review declared, “As Marilyn Maye threaded her way from the stage through a packed house of cheering admirers; I overheard comparisons to Judy Garland's 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall.”   
Known for their rich blend of Western harmony and unique sense of humor, Riders in the Sky is a two-time Grammy® Award-winning group that has captivated audiences of all ages across the country for more than three decades. The group has made 700 separate appearances at Nashville’s Grande Ole Opry and his best known to younger audiences for their performance of “Woody’s Roundup” in Toy Story 2.   

Award-winning singer/songwriter Jim Van Slyke performs all the hits from the distinguished catalogue of Neil Sedaka in his critically-acclaimed Sedaka Show. The show has even attracted the attention of its inspiration, Sedaka joined Van Slyke onstage for duet performances in New York City, San Francisco, and Hollywood. Sedaka’s hits include “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” and “Your Precious Love.”

David Pomeranz’s Chaplin: A Life in Concert is a musical dramatization of the life story of Charlie Chaplin, of which famed American singer and pianist Michael Feinstein calls “an imaginative, emotional and inspiring journey that leaves the audience walking on air.”

Bay Street Brassworks delight audiences by performing a wide variety of musical genres, ranging from classical to show tunes and swing to Dixieland. The Brassworks have performed opening ceremonies at National League baseball games and are the Grand Prize winners of the 2003 New York Brass Conference International Brass Quintet Competition.
