Protect your business by keeping your online policy up to date says Shropshire solicitor Martin Kaye

Graham Davies, a senior partner at leading Shropshire solicitors Martin Kaye LLP has been warning employers of the importance of having an internet policy and of keeping it up to date and relevant in order to protect the reputation of their company.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 10, 2011 - Graham Davies, Head of Commercial Litigation and a senior partner at leading Shropshire based solicitors Martin Kaye LLP, has been warning Shropshire businesses of the importance of keeping their internet, email and social media policies up to date in order to protect the image and reputation of their companies.

The internet is constantly changing, particularly when it comes to social networking. This is changing the way employees communicate in the workplace, and Mr Davies feels that Shropshire companies need to take notice. He said it was crucial that employers reviewed their email and internet policies regularly.

"With technology moving at such an incredible pace, any policies you put in place may well be out of date in a very short time. So it's vital that every company looks closely at its procedures frequently in order to stay one step ahead."

Mr Davies particularly focused on policies regarding social networking and video sharing sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. The Shropshire solicitor said that due to the increased interest in such sites, policies on these areas really need to be tightened up.

"You may decide to ban your staff from posting anything about the work they do for your company or anything that could identify it, because you don't want internal discussions or decisions spread all over the internet.

"And don't allow workers to provide links to your company's website because you don't want to give the impression that you're officially linked to what they may have written in a personal capacity.

"It's also important to stress to employees that they must clearly state that any views they express are their own, and not your corporate opinion.

"Technology is changing the face of communication in all areas of our lives today, and it's up to you to ensure your staff don't damage your company's reputation with ill-considered messages and personal opinions."

Mr Davies' key message was that if you don't have an internet policy then you should get one as a priority, and if you do make sure it is constantly up to date and irrelevant in order to keep up with the pace of change online.
