The Honoree of Merit Award is bestowed each year upon an individual who has made a significant and demonstrable contribution to the Maritime Transportation System in the state of California. As the 2012 Honoree, Senator Lowenthal will be recognized for his commitment within state government to raising awareness of the importance of public ports and generating a collaborative spirit throughout regulatory agencies, private industry and local communities in regard to environmental stewardship issues.
"Senator Lowenthal has been strongly committed to a robust, safe and green port industry in California throughout his tenure in state government as an Assembly Member and Senator,” commented Robert Dockendorff, CALMITSAC Chairman. “As he winds down his role in state governance, we are pleased to announce that he has been chosen as the Honoree for the 2012 California Maritime Leadership Symposium. His mark on California's maritime industry is deep and lasting. He is more than deserving of this honor."

Over the past 12 years, the California Maritime Leadership Symposium has become one of the premier events focused on briefing Sacramento's policymakers on key matters related to the entire Maritime Transportation System. It is the only comprehensive forum for port executives, commissioners and other stakeholders across the state to seek resolution to the growing challenges the Maritime Transportation System faces.
The California Maritime Leadership Symposium is hosted by a broad-based Coalition of the maritime industry headed up by the California Association of Port Authorities, California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference, California Marine and Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council, California Maritime Academy, Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce, and the Propeller Club of Los Angeles - Long Beach.
