Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin Proclaims “November is National Healthy Skin Month”

Nov. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- As part of a national campaign by the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA), Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has recognized November 2011 as National Healthy Skin Month.

The purpose of the AADA’s National Healthy Skin Month is to raise awareness of the importance of skin in overall health, encourage the public to keep their skin, hair and nails healthy, and to see a board-certified dermatologist for the proper diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions and serious diseases.

According to the AADA, our skin is our body's first line of defense against disease and infection, and it protects our internal organs from injuries. Skin works nonstop to protect our body, so it’s important to take care of it. November is a great time to evaluate the health of our skin.

Consider these facts:
•   Skin is the largest and most visible organ of the human body. Since its job is to protect the body, it is important to protect the skin.
•   There are more than 3,000 identified varieties of skin conditions that can cause severe emotional and social effects, physical disfigurement or death;
•   At any given time, one out of every three people in the United States suffers from a skin, hair or nail condition.
•   Dermatologists are using the latest science to treat skin cancer and other skin conditions, save lives and improve the quality of their patient's lives.
•   Skin diseases are estimated to cost more than $39 billion annually in medical services and lost productivity.

Governor Shumlin’s proclamation stated that awareness of skin cancer and other skin conditions is central to the health of Vermonters.
