Nov. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- The U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday awarded the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority (TBARTA) $1.1 million to fund a one-stop transportation information resource for the seven-county region of Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

The “One-Call/One-Click” initiative will provide information on transportation programs and services throughout the region via the web, over the phone and through mobile applications.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for TBARTA and for our region,’’ said TBARTA Executive Director Bob Clifford. “We know there is a need for consistent, accurate information on transportation programs throughout our region. We are pleased to be able to offer this service in an easy, one-stop location for the public.’’

The TBARTA project is one of 55 programs in 32 states and Guam that received a total of $34.6 million through the Federal Transit Administration for initiatives that would enhance access to transportation services for veterans and military families. While the TBARTA program will target veterans and military families, the information will be available to all members of the public.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, who leads the Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative, announced the recipients on Wednesday. The program is a joint effort of U.S. DOT and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

““The Obama Administration is committed to providing our military veterans and their families with the resources they need and deserve,” Secretary LaHood said. “These projects will better connect them with a range of reliable, affordable transportation options so they can get to work as well as the supermarket, their kid’s day care center, medical facilities, and other destinations.”

TBARTA’s application was supported by the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in St. Petersburg, U.S. Rep Gus Bilirakis, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Veterans Affairs Committee, Pasco County and the Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization. The project is expected to be implemented in stages over a period of 12 to 18 months.

“We are truly honored to have received such outstanding community support in seeking these funds,’’ said TBARTA Chairman Ronnie Duncan. “By continuing to work with our partners throughout the region, we’ll be able to expand transportation options for the citizens of the region.’’
