Nov. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- After a very troubling summer in the Philly School System there is some good news from a technology point of view.  JCPenny, Boeing, NextFab Studios and Atomic robotics (a local student run robotics club) are teaming up give Philadelphia students the opprtunity to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition.  http://www.atomicrobotics.com/what-is-first/

J. C. Penney has come forward with a $10,000 i.am FIRST Rookie Team Grants which also includes a “jcpenney Spirit Kit” (made up of team T-shirts, a banner and robot stickers) http://www.atomicrobotics.com/placemarks/jcpenny/

Boeing is also getting into the fray by donating the $6,500 registration fee and the time of three of its engineers to  work with the students for the next 6 months.  These engineers are joining a team of engineers from Drexel, UPenn, the US Navy and other local organizations. http://www.atomicrobotics.com/placemarks/boeing/

NextFab Studios is donating use of its machine shop at 37 & Market along with over 20 hours of training for the students to learn complex machining and computer controlled manufacturing methods.  They are also donating the use of their 3D design software and training for the student to learn how to create 3D models of their designs.

The Atomic Robotics student run robotics club is partnered with UPenn, Penn States, Drexel University, DVIRC, 4H, and others to increase STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) hands on learning opportunities for Philadelphia Students. The club is currently working with over 50 students from 3 schools and will be competing in several local robotics competitions next Spring. http://www.atomicrobotics.com/

The team is currently still looking for partners and sponsors as it needs over $50,000 to compete per season.  This competition can be thought of as football team for nerds and requires about as many resources, practices and coaches as a football team to be successful.
