The award is the seventh of a series of local, national and international awards won by the designer, manufacturer and turn-key installer of the Windancer horizontal-axis wind turbine.
The Windancer is a high efficiency, compact, noise-free (negligible noise and vibration) small wind turbine that is featured on the Ontario-based company’s webpage www.windsimplicity.ca.
One of only 12 designs to win this year's Gold Spark Pro Award, the Windancer was selected from a pool of over 200 entries from around the globe. All submissions were evaluated by a jury, comprising 12 independent multi-disciplinary experts from design and related fields.
Spark Award Executive Director and Founder, Peter Kuchnicki, said that the contest was vigorous and the work innovative and beautiful.
“This year, as in the past five, entrants faced very strong competition. All the work at the finalist level was of a very high caliber,” Mr. Kuchnicki said.
“The award mission is to honour and promote companies whose lead-thinking design addresses problems in order to improve our lives and our earth.”
Spark also aims to initiate positive, design-led change, by highlighting the best new solutions.
Windancer designer and Wind Simplcity C.E.O, Sharolyn Vettese, said she was glad the jury agreed that the Windancer embodied Spark thinking. As a machine that was not only attractive, but one that also improved the environment and human condition, she said that it was designed to help change the world for the better.

As likely the world’s greenest wind turbine, the Windancer can be recycled because it is made of recyclable steel (body) and aluminum (blades); the Windancer’s windblades are made of aluminum, not fiberglass like most wind turbines. Aluminum, unlike fiberglass, has a cradle-to-cradle lifecycle, keeping it out of landfill and incinerators.
The Windancer’s production is sustainable as it doesn’t involve making fiberglass, which produces hazardous air emissions, spent solvents, and wastes that can impact the environment (air, land, water, nature, animals), and the community, including workers.
By producing renewable energy at the point of use and having a sustainable lifecycle and production the Windancer reduces CO2 emissions, land use, toxic waste, and water consumption and contamination.
The Windancer small wind turbine reduces the use of electricity generated from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas) and nuclear power (uranium). These ways of making electricity pollute our air and land (through producing greenhouse gas emissions or radioactive waste). They are also water-hungry ways to make electricity and use and pollute precious water resources through ongoing exploration, extraction and production.
“The Windancer’s aluminum windblades would require negligible water for cleaning only in the most arid of areas, so it can make electricity without constantly using up precious water resources to do so,” said Ms. Vettese.
“Reducing our use of water in electricity production is vital, with the world power sector being the largest industrial water user.”
Wind Simplicity was honoured at the Spark awards celebration held at the Auto Desk Gallery in San Francisco on October 21.
Other companies to take away a Spark award were Philips Sonicare and Dyson.
