Yet Another Study Confirms Yaz Increases Risk of Blood Clots

Nov. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- The Canadian Medical Association Journal released a study of 330,000 Israeli women indicating that blood clots were more likely for those who were taking Yaz and Yasmin, which are birth control pills that contain the synthetic hormone drospirenone.

In this study, 359 cases of deep vein thrombosis and 159 cases of pulmonary embolism occurred.  The risk of blood clots was 65 percent higher among drospirenone users than among women taking second-generation contraceptives containing levonorgestrel and norgestrel, and 43 percent higher than women on third-generation pills containing desogestrel, gestodene and norgestimate.

The risk was highest in the first four months of use.  Other risk factors included high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer, obesity and older age.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs when a blood clot forms in the veins of the legs or pelvis.  Clots can break away and travel through the blood stream to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which can be deadly.

Jennifer Wu, MD from Lenox Hill Hospital in New York led the study and commented, “I would probably avoid the ones (birth control] that contain drospirenone just because of the risk of the blood clots in the lungs and the legs.”

This is the third study to be released within the past two weeks to confirm the increased dangerous risks associated with drospirenone-containing birth control pills like Yaz and Yasmin.   On October 25, 2011 The British Medical Journal released a study confirming the same findings and on October 27, 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released their independent study findings confirming the significant increased risk associated with drospirenone.    FDA advisers are scheduled to meet December 8 to further review the safety of drospirenone-containing contraceptives.
