FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 7, 2011 - Adelphi University has officially launched the Center for Health Innovation (CHI), a cornerstone of the University’s comprehensive strategic plan. The new Center will unite Adelphi’s various healthcare programs and services with the goal of improving the regional healthcare landscape and is a breakthrough, radical collaboration initiative for the University. The Center seeks to tackle and improve current and emerging healthcare needs and make Adelphi a primary resource in the region for innovative, evidence-based responses to improving healthcare, healthcare systems, and public health.

Adelphi is uniquely positioned to address critical regional healthcare issues. The intersection of the study, practice and policy of health is embedded into Adelphi University’s history. Our programs, centers, research, and outreach efforts focus on providing support in four key areas: community and public health, mental health, personal health, and environmental health.

“As longtime innovators in health education and research, Adelphi has developed preeminent programs in nursing, social work, psychology, and other fields related to physical, mental, and community health,” said Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University. “The Center for Health Innovation will focus on problem-solving and infusing new ideas, data, and technologies into this sector making Adelphi an even stronger thought leader in healthcare.”

The CHI is a progressive collaboration of schools and disciplines within Adelphi. Collectively, the University offers more than 55 established health-related academic programs across 7 schools and colleges and has developed new, innovative and interdisciplinary programs in health information technology and a master of public health (MPH). CHI establishes a single point of reference for all health-related programs and services, thereby creating a collective identity, increasing efficiency, and expanding Adelphi’s regional influence in healthcare. “Our faculty collaborated in the development of the Center and our practitioner-focused, interdisciplinary academic programming, to meet current and emergent healthcare needs,” said Dr. Gayle D. Insler, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “This is a very exciting venture joining education, research, and community partnerships to transform the preparation of regional healthcare leaders.”

The University has an extensive history of expertise in health scholarship, outreach, and education. Adelphi faculty members from disciplines as diverse as education, psychology, and social work diligently work to support individual and community well-being through relevant research, publications, public health advocacy, and consultative services. Faculty members have been especially active in conducting primary and secondary research, disseminating results, and organizing discussions about critical issues such as autism and nutrition. The Center for Health Innovation’s first year initiative was the creation of an Autism Task Force, which is a team of experts in autism across the full spectrum of diagnosis that is actively changing the lives of autistic individuals and their supporters, both locally and globally.

The Center will launch with a new graduate degree in health information technology; build upon the highly recognized work such as the Vital Signs reports of our Institute for Social Research and Community Engagement (iSoRCE); amplify our community service programs to advance health initiatives that benefit our communities, including specialized clinic care, training and institutes, supportive services, and recreational and fitness activities;  and create provocative conversations through “Think About It”, the Center’s online forum for the consideration and discussion of  emerging ideas in improving health and healthcare systems.  New academic programs will be forthcoming.  Additional activities will include public symposia and professional conferences, publications, fellowship programs, and a broad array of professional development offerings.

“At Adelphi, the new Center for Health Innovation will build on our strong partnerships with hospitals, schools, community service organizations, and other health related institutions throughout the New York Metropolitan area to chart a new focus on innovating healthcare science, delivery, and education,” said Dr. Patrick R. Coonan, acting director of the Center and dean of the Adelphi University School of Nursing.
“CHI’s programs, research, and events will address pressing health issues and build healthier communities.”
