Nov. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- MANILA, Philippines – Espresso World, the official international education partner of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) to the Philippines, have announced that it will host a three-day skill enhancing training event aimed in strengthening and advancing the skills of coffee professionals in the local industry.

The three-day skill building workshops will feature SCAA courses on espresso, cupping or coffee taste testing, coffee brewing fundamentals and barista development. The event will also offer an opportunity for Filipino coffee professionals to take the Level One Certification Exam of the Barista Guild of America (BGA), the industry’s most sought after barista certification and accreditation.

All workshops are led by three SCAA-certified trainers  namely Anne Nylander, President of TampTamp Inc. and a Certified Sensory Judge to the World Barista Championship; Sarah Posma, General Manager of Alaska Coffee Roasting Company and a BGA Level  One and Level Two Certified Barista; and Hugo Neuproler, Lead Barista of 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters and a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee of the World Barista Championship,  World Latte Art Championship, World Cup Tasters, World Brewers Cup, World Coffee in Good Spirits and World Cezve Ibrik Championship.

May Juan, CEO of Espresso World says, “Espresso World is very privileged to have partnered with the SCAA in bringing its skill building courses and certifications to the Philippines. The specialty coffee industry looks up to the SCAA – the association is the standard setter and leader in professional development, and at the forefront of developing and recognizing skilled coffee professionals.”

“SCAA’s certification courses will aid Filipino coffee professionals in their quest for excellence as all programs are derived on internationally accepted standards and techniques. When you have an SCAA certification next to your name, you can be assured that it will carry the same weight regardless of where your career takes you. The certification is recognized worldwide and is a testament that you are a true skilled coffee professional,” reiterates Juan.

“The December workshops are just the beginning and next year, we plan to bring in SCAA’s programs on coffee grading and evaluation, coffee roasting and processing, coffee preparation, coffee business, sustainability, and global issues on coffee. It is our hope that in future, local coffee consumers will have their coffees prepared or brewed by a certified Filipino barista and brewer, or their beans roasted and cupped by a certified Filipino roaster and cupper. Through proper training and development of right skills, our local professionals will not only become competitive. More importantly, these certified professionals will be able to contribute to the productivity of our local farmers and producers, and in educating the local coffee community on the importance of following industry-set standards. To sum, the introduction of SCAA certifications will greatly improve the whole seed to cup chain of the Philippine coffee industry,” ends Juan.

The SCAA workshops will run from December 6 to 8 at Tower One in Ayala, Makati City. For more details, please contact (02) 3685656 or visit www.espressoworld.org.
