Science Camp, a nonprofit organization committed to promoting children's interest in science, is promising two weeks of free science camp for 240 children if it receives enough votes from the public to win $250,000 from the Chase Giving Program.
“We make our summer science camp affordable to families through gifts and donations”, remarked Fola Adebi, Executive Director, Wow! Science Camp®. “A $250,000 gift through the Chase program will allow us to support 240 children for two full weeks at no cost to their families”, she added. The fall 2011 round of the Chase Community Giving program is designed to benefit smaller and local charities by being limited to 501c3 charities with operating budgets under $1 million. The top eligible charity receives $250,000 and the remaining 99 top charities earn $25,000 through $100,000 awards. More than $3 million dollars will be distributed to top vote getters. Charities previously awarded grants through Chase Community Giving are not eligible for this round of competition. Wow! Science Camp® is competing with thousands of charities across the country for awards from Chase. With the support of volunteers, fans and local residents, the camp has the opportunity to get much needed resources to expand its science and math enrichment program. Mayor David Mayer of Gloucester Township and Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez of Camden County were on hand on August 19 to congratulate campers who completed the 2011 camp season. Mayor Mayer reminded the young campers of the relevance of science to all aspects of life. From building and maintaining roads, bridges, and dams to managing the township's budget, he demonstrated how science applies to various aspects of his role as mayor. The following comment by a camper’s parent illustrates how Wow! Science Camp® is making a difference in the community: “Ms. Adebi, before I saw your lawn sign, I had just approached my son’s school principal because he is not being taught science in the third grade. His favorite subject is math but the school and tutoring centers are not helping him to explore where math can take him in the world. We haven’t had any field trips outside of a few theater plays in Atco. I go to the library and ask for science workshops but we just don’t have any in our area. Thank you for giving these children a chance to show their capabilities! How You Can Help You can help Wow!
