Nov. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- ART fans across the city can browse thousands of the Glynn Vivian’s paintings, sculptures and ceramics with the click of a mouse at Swansea Civic Centre.

A specialist computer system called Modes that shows and describes all pieces in the gallery’s collection has now been transferred to Central Library.

The computer is located close to the library’s arts section and will stay in place throughout the redevelopment of the Glynn Vivian.

The gallery closed to the public at the end of October to pave the way for a £6 million upgrade that will include a new lecture and community room, a new entrance and shop at street level and more space than ever before for exhibits

Structural work will start on site in the New Year and is expected to take about two years to complete.

Central Library staff have also been armed with key information about the Glynn Vivian’s redevelopment and a programme of arts workshops and events will continue to run elsewhere throughout the gallery’s temporary closure.

Free classes for over 55s, Saturday workshops for children and school holiday activities will be held at venues including Central Library, the YMCA on St Helen’s Road and Swansea Metropolitan University from January 2012.

Glynn Vivian staff are now working on a specific programme of dates and times and further information will be released next month.

The exhibitions team will also be working with artists on projects for the Glynn Vivian’s reopening in 2014.
The redevelopment scheme is being funded by the Welsh Government, the Arts Council of Wales and Swansea Council.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “The historic Glynn Vivian building has now closed to the public to allow preparations for an exciting redevelopment scheme that will conserve its character and offer a modern visiting experience.

“But staff are working hard to ensure many of the Glynn Vivian’s services continue to be made available throughout redevelopment. One of the first stages of the planning is to transfer the Modes terminal to Central Library and give staff there information about the Glynn Vivian upgrade and what will be happening throughout its closure.

“We’ll do all we can to continue to keep people updated about off-site activities.”
