Follow on Google News | Houston tree expert advises tree planting this fall and winterLouis Flory, owner of Ability Trees says area homeowners should consider planting more trees now despite drought.
Houston tree specialist Louis Flory, owner of Ability Tree Experts (http://www.abilitytrees.com) “Fall and winter are good seasons for tree planting,” Flory said this weekend. “I know people might think that because of all the drought and heat, this might not be a good time to plant trees but it actually is.” He advised homeowners to water regularly to help the newly planted trees take root. “The trick there is watering. Do not just plant and walk away. You need to water often.” The Houston Arborist said planting in the cooler months of fall and winter gives the roots time to settle. “This allows them to grow their roots and get ready for the next summer. It also affords them a jump on the planting season. Establishing their root before the summer will give the trees a chance to survive when the heat comes.” Other Houston area tree specialists agree with this assessment. "We are encouraging people to plant," says Mickey Merritt of the Texas Forest Service. "While the drought is very severe, we still think it's a perfect opportunity to teach people that trees are important and to educate them on the proper way to plant and water." Louis Flory of Ability Tree Experts said homeowners should plant trees they know they can water and easily maintain. “Most newly planted trees require watering at regular intervals. They should be watered at least three times a week, depending on rainfall, drainage and temperatures. Water when the temperature is low since water drains slower at lower temperatures and use an average five gallons per inch of trunk diameter.” “Even if the heat and drought continues through fall and winter, it is still a good idea to plant now because most trees will go dormant and require less maintenance and irrigation,” About Ability Tree Experts Houston, Texas based Ability Tree Experts is a member of the National Arborist Association.
