All proceeds benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the leading organization in the field of retinal research.
By: PATLive The Magnolia Farm Hoe-Down is an afternoon and evening full of country pleasures, including a barbecue dinner, sporting clays, horse rides, mechanical bull rides, a greased pole climb, a greased pig chase and hayrides. Tom & the Cats, a local band, will also perform followed by a grand fireworks show. Sharyn and Glen Davidson, co-chairs of the Hoe-Down, have hosted the event at their farm for 11 years to raise money and awareness for the Foundation Fighting Blindness and its efforts to find treatments and cures for blinding retinal diseases, such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Retinal eye diseases currently affect over 10 million Americans, and are expected to increase by 50 percent in the next 10 years. The Davidson family hopes to have 500-1000 people in attendance and raise over $90,000 for research, as this is a very personal mission for the family. Sharyn witnessed her mother go completely blind from RP over 20 years ago. Sharyn and her three brothers were also diagnosed with RP, as well as two of the four Davidson children. “When we began fundraising over 10 years ago, there had been very few breakthroughs other than the identification of a few genes that caused some of these diseases. We thought it very improbable that there would be treatments in time for Sharyn and her brothers’ generation, but surely there would be something before our children were seriously impacted,” says Glen. “However, in recent years, the research has moved at an incredible pace, and we are confident that there will be treatments and cures in the next 10 years. Viable treatments are waiting for the funding to get from the lab to the people who have been desperately waiting for them. With the help of our friends and community, we can be a part of making that happen.” Come out to Magnolia Farm and join us for a toe-tappin’, belly rubbin’ good time in support of a great cause.
