Nov. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- (Cherry Hill, NJ, 11/2/2011) - In an effort to meet the needs of our community’s growing demand for blood, South Jersey Health & Wellness Center is sponsoring a blood drive in honor of Veteran’s Day on Saturday, November 12th at 1919 Greentree Rd. in Cherry Hill from 12pm – 4:30pm. The drive is open to the entire community, and South Jersey Heatlh & Wellness Center will also be offering free health screenings.

Our community’s supply of blood is increasingly low and, in fact, becoming critically low. As the demand for transfusions increases, donor and donation rates are not keeping pace with this demand, pointed out Marie Forrestal, Director of Donor Recruitment at New Jersey Blood Services. Donations often lag behind each day by as much as 20-25 percent. The state of New Jersey imports over 70,000 pints of blood each year from other U.S. blood centers just to meet local hospital patient needs. We simply need more local donors, more frequent donations and more organizations to sponsor blood drives if we ever hope to meet the goal of blood self-sufficiency in our community.

New Jersey Blood Services supplies blood to over 60 New Jersey hospitals, and volunteer blood donations are needed each day for patients in these New Jersey hospitals.

All donors will receive a yellow ribbon pin to honor America’s brave veterans. To make a convenient donor appointment, visit https://drm.nybloodcenter.org/PublicScheduler/GroupWelcom... or call 1-800-933-BLOOD (2566). Walk-ins are always welcome.

Blood donors must be between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in generally good health. 16 year old donors require parental consent to be eligible, and donors over 75 years of age must obtain a note from their primary care physician stating that they are in good health to donate blood.

All donors will benefit from a free mini exam including a review of their pulse rate, blood pressure, iron count (hemoglobin) and temperature. Donors will need a photo ID and proof of age. Donors who are not sure if they are eligible to donate can call 1-800-933-BLOOD (2566).

New Jersey Blood Services, conducts an estimated 250 blood drives per month in 14 New Jersey counties and needs approximately 120,000 donors annually in order to supply over 60 local New Jersey hospitals.
