Tangos and More -- Friday November 11 at 8 PM in New York!

Nov. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- North/South Consonance, Inc. continues its 32nd consecutive season of free-admission concerts on Friday evening November 11 when the internationally acclaimed pianist  Max Lifchitz presents a recital featuring works inspired by the Afro-Caribbean clave rhythm.

   The recital will start at  8 PM and will take place at the auditorium of Christ & St. Stephen’s Church (120 West 69th St) in New York City.  Admission is free.

   Mr. Lifchitz – described by the American Record Guide as ” a consummate musician .... one of America’s finest exponents of contemporary piano music”  and praised by the NY Times  for his "clean, measured and sensitive performances”  -- will play music by the 19th century American virtuoso pianist  Louis Moreau Gottschalk; the 19th century Cuban composer Manuel Saumell;  the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla; Brazilians Ernesto Nazareth & Heitor Villa-lobos; and  the German-born but American by choice Stefan Wolpe.  He will introduce the composers and their music and will show how the “habanera” rhythms coined by Saumell in the 1840’s migrated and became associated with the music of other regions.

   This concert will be Mr. Lifchitz’s only New York recital for the current season.  He is available for  interviews and other media events and may be contacted through the North/South Consonance office at  ns.concerts(at)att.net.

   The event is part of the 6th Latin American Cultural Week in New York sponsored by the Pan American Music and Art Research organization (PAMAR),

   North/South Consonance’s 2011-12 season is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; grants from Columbia University’s Alice M. Ditson Fund and the Zethus Fund;  as well as contributions by many generous individuals.

     Active as pianist, conductor and composer, Max Lifchitz was born in Mexico City in 1948 and has resided in New York City since 1966. Described by the American Record Guide magazine as “a consummate musician .....one of America’s finest exponents of contemporary piano music,” Mr. Lifchitz has released 9 highly praised compact disc albums  featuring piano music by composers from the Americas and appears as collaborative artist or conductor on many more. A graduate of The Juilliard School and Harvard University, Mr. Lifchitz has appeared as soloist and recitalist throughout the US, Europe and Latin America and won  first prize in the 1976 International Gaudeamus Competition for Performers of Twentieth Century Music held in Holland. Robert Commanday, writing for The San Francisco Chronicle described him as "a young composer of brilliant imagination and a stunning, ultra-sensitive pianist." New York Times music critic Allan Kozinn praised Mr. Lifchitz for his "clean, measured and sensitive performances” while Anthony Tommasini stated that he “conducted a strong performance.” Payton MacDonald, writing for the American Record Guide, remarked, “Mr. Lifchitz is as good on the podium as he is behind the piano.” Lifchitz has released 9 highly praised compact disc albums  featuring piano music by composers from the Americas and appears as collaborative artist or conductor on many more.
