On November 2, 2011, MWE will be sponsoring the fourth Margolin, Winer & Evens Long Island “College Accounting Challenge” at Adelphi University in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The competition, which begins at 6:00 p.m., is a quiz-show-style event that will pit five teams of four representing Adelphi, NYIT, Molloy College, SUNY Old Westbury, and Briarcliff College against each other and test the students’ knowledge in their chosen field. Teams will answer challenging accounting questions in ethics, tax, auditing, and financial accounting. Special guest Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos will deliver opening remarks. The event is free and open to the public, and supported this year by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Hundreds of students, faculty, alumni, and friends are expected to attend and to cheer on their teams.
The buzz is already starting on these five competing campuses to see which Long Island college will gain bragging rights for the best and the brightest accounting students. The winning school will receive a commemorative trophy and each team member will win a $300 American Express gift card. IMA will offer prize money to participants as well as a one year free IMA membership to the top two teams. In addition to the IMA, Becker Professional Education will once again offer CPA exam prep scholarships and free materials to help students prepare for the exam.
An entertaining twist has been added to the 2011 challenge. This year, the professors from each school will compete in a “Minute to Win It” intermission event, from the popular TV show.
“It is a thrill to watch these future CPAs compete each year,” said MWE Managing Partner Teddy Selinger. “They are the best and the brightest that Long Island has to offer and we are proud to sponsor an event where they can showcase their knowledge.”
