Canadian Antiques Roadshow NOT Coming To Vancouver Island

One of TV’s most popular shows will NOT be coming to Vancouver Island despite recent ads appearing in British Columbia papers giving the impression that another of the ‘Canadian Antiques Roadshow’ series is in the making.

Nov. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- One of TV’s most popular shows will not be coming to Vancouver Island - or anywhere else for that matter!  Tony Duke, a Vancouver Island-based expert from the CBC’s popular “Canadian Antiques Roadshow” said this week, “‘Despite it’s enormous following neither the CBC nor the show’s producers have any plans to record another series of the Roadshow.” Duke continued; “it seems the public has been misled by some newspaper ads from a commercial venture into believing that we will be bringing the show to the Island.”

Many members of the public have been duped by full page ads which have been appearing recently in British Columbia papers giving the impression that another of the ‘Roadshow’ series is in the making. Duke commented, “Our show is primarily educational and not-for-profit. The appraisers on ‘The Canadian Antiques Roadshow’ never make offers to purchase and are wholly impartial. Unfortunately there are for-profit commercial enterprises out there who have jumped on the band-wagon and who exploit our popularity by using the words ‘Canadian’ and ‘Roadshow’ in their name”.

Mark Pedersen, one of the Executive Producers of the Canadian Antiques Roadshow when it was in production five years ago, says the show always warned people to be careful about other travelling appraisal shows. "There's nothing to stop operators from using the word Roadshow in their title but for the public, it's a buyer beware situation. They should realize they are not dealing with the show shown on the CBC and be cautious about fees charged for appraisals … and offers to buy their cherished objects."  Pedersen says the Canadian Antiques Roadshow has not travelled since 2007. He thinks local media should be cautious about operators who buy misleading advertisements, making it appear they are the original show.

To clarify the situation Duke appeals to everyone who may attend any of these ‘Roadshow’ type events to be aware of what is actually involved when seeking an Appraisal or an ‘opinion of value.’ Your appraiser must act in your interests, not their own.  They must avoid any conflicts of interest. Your appraiser must not have any financial interest in the item being evaluated, and so must not make an offer to purchase. He or she must be impartial and unbiased when giving their ‘opinion of value’ and so their professional fee must not be based on a percentage of the appraised value. Expect to pay by the piece or by the hour for professional services. While a professional appraiser must not make an offer to buy from you they may act as your agent at your request and sell an item on your behalf or find a buyer for you.

Most importantly, do not be misled: the TV show ‘Canadian Antiques Roadshow’ is NOT coming to town and there are no plans to do so in the immediate future! For more information about antique shops, appraisers and events on Vancouver Island, please see our website: VanIsleAntiques.com.
