Children’s Book Illustration Class in Focal Point Gallery Chapel Hill, starting Nov 14, 6:30- 9pm

For the Very Curious: Illustration is very different than regular picture making in that, while other pictures can be whatever the artist wants, an illustration must tell a specific story. It often requires words to be complete.

Oct. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Children’s books and graphic novels rely on the illustrations to help tell the story; the words are incomplete without the pictures. Each illustration becomes a part of a cohesive work of art, which is the book itself.

The focus of this class is on learning effective visual communication through sequential illustration (…OK, it sounds laborious, but it’s really fun!) While drawing and coloring skills come in very handy for this, they are not the main focus! Very imaginative and effective illustrations can be made by people with rather primitive drawing skills. Illustrations can also be collages or photos. So, though we’ll definitely cover character development in class, we will pretty much work with whatever drawing skills you’ve got.

What becomes important is continuity, sequence, pacing & rhythm, and – the most fun part: imagination! Nothing inspires a child more! Of course, as in all art forms, each person’s unique perspective and personality are also essential ingredients.

This is a come-as-you-are class. A good goal for manuscript length is 500-800 words. Please keep your manuscripts to under 1000 words. (Remember, the pictures will tell a lot of the story, so you can afford to be ruthless with editing!) Manuscripts can be rough drafts, and I can also provide manuscripts for those without.

Teacher Bio:
Stacye Leanza is a professional muralist & illustrator, with a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC. She has taught drawing and art to grown-ups and kids, privately, and in classes and workshops, in both instructional and therapeutic settings. Her focus in the drawing class is on learning how to see by accessing the creative, perceptive Right Brain.
The immediate result is the ability to draw more realistically. Another result is that the capacity for abstraction is embellished by the increased “vocabulary” of images gained from drawing what you truly see, instead of what you think you see. This enriches the art-making process, whether your goal is to draw realistically, or to deepen your abstract work
