The store now operates on fall hours, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, and is offering its fall tree discounts.
“Fall is a great time to plant a tree,” said owner Cindy Jones. “It’s a season of rainfall and cool temperatures, both of which add to great tree growth.”
The Greensboro, N.C. garden center’s sale will last through the entire season. Customers will be able to save 25% off their second tree purchase, and 35% when they buy a third.
To keep trees alive through the fall, Jones recommended readers adhere to the following tips:
Supply about 1 inch of water per week. Continue to this until the ground freezes, so the plant has enough to make it through the winter drought.
Wrap the trunks of thin-barked, young trees in late November to prevent frost cracks, sunscald and animal damage. The wraps will need to be removed in March. Readers can wrap the trunk with burlap up to the lowest branch, and this will help protect the sapling from road salt.
Prune away all damaged, diseased and dead branches.
Rake up leaves under the tree so that plants underneath the tree get adequate water and light.
Stake young trees so the snow and wind does not cause them to become uprooted.
“By following these tips, you can help make sure your trees make it through the fall and winter,” Jones said. “Taking precautions like these listed will ensure your foliage is in good shape come springtime.”
