Terry Weigel, a resident of Phoenix, Maryland since 1987, has been appointed the first Executive Director of There Goes My Hero Foundation. There Goes My Hero Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to restore hope to Leukemia patients and their families by increasing bone marrow registrants, providing nutritious meals, and supporting blood cancer research. It is the vision of There Goes My Hero Foundation to find a bone marrow match for all Leukemia patients and to assist their families through a variety of support programs. There Goes My Hero Foundation is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors, who plan and conduct fundraising events throughout the greater Baltimore area. Hero raises money to fulfill its mission through event proceeds and the generous donations given by businesses and individuals. Weigel has over 25 years of experience in the non-profit field as an event planner, fundraiser, and communications director. She served on the board of There Goes My Hero Foundation for two years prior to her recent appointment. “I look forward to the challenges and opportunities of running a non-profit organization with such a rich and meaningful mission. I am hopeful that the greater Baltimore community will embrace our activities and help us reach out to more individuals and families living with Leukemia and blood cancers.” When an individual is diagnosed with Leukemia or other blood cancers, a bone marrow transplant is a primary treatment. Therefore it is crucial that a bone marrow match be found. The logical place to identify a match is with family members. When that match doesn’t exist, physicians will look to the Bone Marrow Registry to find a match from an international pool of donors. Only 4 out of 10 patients are lucky enough to receive a transplant. Registering to become a bone marrow donor is a simple cheek swab; but it is also a commitment to help save a life. Donors must be between 18 and 55 and in good general health. There Goes My Hero Foundation holds bone marrow drives throughout the year, to increase the possibility of finding matches for individuals stricken with Leukemia and other blood cancers.
