Waste Management, Inc. Constructs Organics Recycling facility at its Apopka Solid Waste Landfill

Oct. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Waste Management’s added an Organics Recycling facility to its Apopka, Florida solid waste landfill.  This process builds on Waste Management’s commitment of furthering environmental friendly solutions.  The facility serves to take rotten produce from restaurants and grocery stores and compost them into fertilizer and mulch.  Rotten produce is typically discarded in the landfill.  The Organics Recycling facility will recycle this waste product in a beneficial environmentally friendly manner.  Thereby, prolonging the life of the landfill and enhancing the environment.

The Organics Recyling facility covers over 14 acres of land, at the same Apopka Florida location as the landfill. This new system includes a receiving building, mixing conveyor, nine primary aerated bunkers, 18 secondary aerated bunkers, waste liquid collection system, and biofilters for odor removal.  This new system will, in 42 days, compost the waste produce into fertilizer and mulch for other beneficial uses in commercial landscaping.  Once completed, the facility will be able to process 45 tons of organic wastes per year.

Excel Engineering Consultants, LLC. served as Lead Consultant, providing management and engineering services.  This included coordination of the entire project encompassing surveying, geotechnical, structural, and treatment equipment manufacturer.  Excel then designed the land development construction plans, equipment and piping layout, process waste treatment system, and permitting with the City of Apopka.
