Oct. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Community Health Charities of Georgia (CHCG) is pleased to welcome Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Coastal Georgia Affiliate as a new partner agency.

While many CHCG partner agencies provide services in the Savannah/Coastal Georgia area, this is the first agency to be based there and focus its efforts solely on local residents.  Other CHCG agencies with Savannah locations include the Alzheimer’s Association, American Diabetes Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Lupus Foundation of America and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

CHCG connects Georgia employees with the resources, services and volunteer opportunities of 48 participating health charities through its free Health Matters at Work® program.  Employees also have the opportunity to direct donations to the health charities of their choice through payroll deduction.  In Georgia and across the country, Community Health Charities is the only workplace giving program devoted exclusively to health.  With one of every four employees personally affected by health issues, the need is greater than ever.

“We have always supported the Savannah area by partnering with health charities that do important work there, but we are delighted to welcome the Coastal Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as our first Savannah-based agency,” said Brenda Horne, Chief Executive Officer of CHCG.  “Our next goal is to find local businesses who want to provide the valuable health resources we offer to their employees.”

The Health Matters at Work® program was created to help employees engage with the nation’s most trusted health charities in the workplace.  From video podcasts and webinars to local volunteer opportunities, this program gives employees free access to credible health information and can be easily implemented by any company.

“Healthcare costs are typically the second or third largest expense in every major company, and a healthy workforce is key to a healthy bottom line,” Horne said.  “As we establish a solid presence in Savannah, we look forward to working with the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate and reaching out to local companies to help make health a part of their employee engagement efforts.”

The Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate is part of the 125-Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever.  Through local events and activities like Savannah Race for the Cure, the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate mobilizes and educates thousands of community members while raising funds to support community-based breast cancer programs.

A total of 75 percent of funds raised by the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate stays local to fund education, screening and treatment programs throughout nine counties (Bulloch, Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long and McIntosh).  The remaining 25 percent supports national research programs.  In 2011, the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate awarded $250,000 in grants.  Since its inception five years ago, the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate has funded nearly $775,000 in local breast health programs.  To learn more, please visit www.komencoastalgeorgia.org.
