Follow on Google News | Media and riots in the spotlightAttend a unique one-day conference that brings together young people from riot areas and media practitioners.
By: The-Latest.Com It is being organised by the Citizen Journalism Educational Trust and website the-latest.com which want to create a report following the conference that will "have a positive impact on future media coverage of our communities" The conference will include informative, educative and practical general sessions featuring speakers and youth-focused breakout workshops. Academic and community activist Professor Gus John will be one of the keynote speakers at the Media and the Riots conference. He said: "At times like these, one gets a very real sense of two things: one is how encapsulated these journalists are within their own narrow, little and incestuous bubbles without any grasp of social realities in the polity. "And two, how banal, hysterical and downright reactionary the editorial slant they give to their news packages is." Supporters of the event include people from the BBC's College of Journalism, London College of Communication, South Bank University, the University of Leicester, The Guardian, The Big Issue, Tottenham Defence Campaign, Birmingham Racial Attacks Monitoring Unit, and Unite London. Stafford Scott, a long-standing Tottenham community activist, said: "Martin Luther King once said that riots gave a voice to the voiceless; but the voices of those who felt moved to take to the streets in August are still very much unheard." Editor of the-latest.com Marc Wadsworth said: "This conference is about people marginalised and ignored by big media getting heard." The conference is on Saturday November 26 between 10am and 3pm at London College of Communication, Elephant and Castle. Tickets can be booked via http://www.the- End
