Printers Row Dentistry’s Dr. Gregory Page Claims Halloween Candy Does Not Damage Tooth Enamel

Oct. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- In lieu of Halloween, Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Greg A. Page of Printers Row Dentistry in the South Loop recently addressed the public’s misconception that candy and sugar decays teeth and damages tooth enamel.

Every year parents around the world lecture their children about their candy intake on Halloween for one purpose—so they do not overdue it with the candy and sugar to result in tooth decay and cavities.

“Many people believe that it is the sugar in candy that decays teeth, but in fact it is a bacterium that is the cause of it,” said Dr. Greg A. Page of Printers Row Dentistry.  “The candy feeds the bacterium, causing it to grow in numbers and excrete toxins and acids that lead to teeth and gum decay.”

Dr. Page advises that it is important to brush your teeth immediately following eating the candy so that you do not allow the bacterium the time to process the sugar, excrete the acids and cause the damage.

“Of course, rather than having to worry about tooth and gum decay due to the bacteria from eating candy, there are additional ways to practice good dental health,” said Dr. Page.  “These include visiting your dentist for cleaning and a check-up every six months, using a Sonic Care toothbrush daily, and having your dentist whiten your teeth for a more youthful, beautiful smile.”
