Renewal Information for North Dakota MFTs

License renewal and continuing education information for North Dakota licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs)

Oct. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- The North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board (NDMFTLB) was established by the North Dakota Legislature in 2005. The Board's mission is to adopt and enforce rules for marriage and family therapy licensing, which are designed to protect the public.

The NDMFTLB regulates licensees through educational requirements, supervised experience, and national and state examinations.

The NDMFTLB also establishes and implements procedures designed to assure that licensed marriage and family therapists will comply with the board's rules.

NDMFTLB adopts and implements a code of ethics for all licensed marriage and family therapists and establishes continuing education requirements for marriage and family therapists.

Continuing Education:

Licensees must complete a minimum of thirty hours of continuing education every two years, of which six hours must be ethics.

Proof of completion of the required hours must be submitted to the board by December thirty-first of each odd-numbered year. The initial two-year period begins on January first of each even-numbered year.

When the licensee applies for renewal of the license, the licensee must submit documentation of the licensee's completion of the required hours of continuing education on an appropriate form furnished by the board. A receipt for payment of the fees for the course is not sufficient evidence of completion of the required hours of continuing education. Licensees shall keep attendance certificates for at least five years as the board may conduct random audits to verify compliance.

Home study courses related to marriage and family therapy must have an independently graded test component. No more than one-fourth (7.5 hours) of the required thirty continuing education hours may be earned by this method.

Course content must relate to marriage and family therapy with an emphasis upon systemic approaches or the theory, research, or practice of psychotherapeutic work with couples or families.

All courses require pre-approval from the Board.
