The Cold is Cool in NH’s Lakes Region

Oct. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Lakes Region, NH – The distinct change in seasons attracts many people to New Hampshire. As visitors start dressing in layers and winter coats become the norm, there’s a new set of reasons to visit central New Hampshire in November, according to the Lakes Region Tourism Association.

The chance of snow before winter’s official arrival and warm fires to cozy up to in local bed and breakfasts are just a few excuses for a Lakes Region excursion. More events begin to move indoors as the temperatures drop. Below are a few November highlights; many others can be found on the LRTA’s website:

-   Beading Class: Tuesday, Nov. 1. League of NH Craftsmen Retail Gallery, 279 Daniel Webster Highway, Meredith. www.NHcrafts.org. Create a bracelet with a traditional Oglala Sioux lace bead netting technique. No experience required. Tuition: $25, plus $12 materials fee.
-   Eagle Pond Authors’ Series: Thursday, Nov. 10. Plymouth State University, Plymouth. http://silver.plymouth.edu. Sharon Olds is the author of eight volumes of poetry, in which she expresses truths about family relationships, sexuality, violence, love and the body. Her most recent collection was a finalist for the T.S. Eliot Prize. Advance tickets are recommended.
-   “Remembering Newt Washburn, 5th Generation Basketmaker”: Sunday, Nov. 13. Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum, Warner. www.IndianMuseum.org. Basket collector Donna Kelley will present a talk on the well-known basketmaker, a descendant of the Abenaki Indians and the Sweetser family from Germany. The talk is free.
-   Gift of Lights: Nov. 18-Jan. 1. New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 1122 Route 106 North, Loudon. The speedway will become home to more than one million LED lights and hundreds of Christmas light displays in a one-mile path around the park. This first annual event expects 120,000 visitors. Admission: $15 per vehicle.
-   Santa Trains: Weekends, Nov. 25-Dec. 18. Route 112, Lincoln. www.SantaTrains.com. Get the family aboard a train with Santa and his elves; children can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and a gift. Tickets: $15 in coach, $18 in first class.
