How Latex Balloons are printed

Oct. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Formally latex balloons were printed using flexographic machinery but now nearly all balloon printers use the silkscreen method with gives a much denser and sharper print.
The basic method for single color screen printing is as follows:

The image to be printed is outputted as a film positive, which is a black print onto a clear film. The screen surface is coated with a light sensitive emulsion. The positive is placed onto the screen and then the screen is exposed to light. The screen is then washed out with water. The part of the screen that was covered with the image washes out so that the screen is open and the rest of the screen remains coated so forming a perfect stencil of the required print.

The screen is then attached to a specialized balloon printing machine and
Filled with ink.

The ink used for balloon printing is rubberized so that it will bond with the balloon and stretch as the balloon inflates. The balloon to be printed is inflated with air and the machine moves it under the printing screen. The screen is lowered onto the balloon so that it is partially squashed to form a flat print area. A squeegee blade then moves across the screen and the ink is pushed through the open parts of the screen to put the image on to the balloon. The screen is then moved up off the balloon and the balloon moves into a drying tunnel before being deflated.
