Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Asbestos was widely used in the past in thousands of products and building materials.  Even though the use of asbestos has been banned in most of these materials, they still can be found in thousands of buildings across Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic.

Asbestos is most commonly found in older homes, in pipe and furnace insulation materials, asbestos shingles, millboard, textured paints and other coating materials, and floor tiles.  When asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed during repair, remodeling or demolition activities, microscopic fibers can become airborne and inhaled into the lungs, causing significant health problems.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the most common sources of asbestos exposure include:
•   Workplace exposure to people that work in industries that mine, make or use asbestos products and those living near these industries, including:
o   the construction industry (particularly building demolition and renovation activities),
o   the manufacture of asbestos products (such as textiles, friction products, insulation, and other building materials), and
o   during automotive brake and clutch repair work
•   Deteriorating, damaged, or disturbed asbestos-containing products such as insulation, fireproofing, acoustical materials, and floor tiles.

Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC (SEHC), is an environmental, health and safety (EHS) consulting firm located in Delaware that has decades of experience protecting building occupants and workers from the dangers of asbestos exposure.  “Unfortunately many homeowners are not aware of the harm they could cause by disturbing asbestos containing materials in their homes during renovation and construction activities,” stated Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC.  “Before removing asbestos containing materials for a renovation program or before demolishing a structure containing asbestos materials, owners are advised to have an inspection by a Delaware licensed asbestos inspector. Property owners or contractors must notify the DNREC at least 10 working days before removing asbestos from a building. Also, asbestos-containing materials can only be disposed of at approved disposal facilities,” she continued.
