Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Lory’s Place will be hosting an International Survivors of Suicide Day event Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Lory’s Place, 445 Upton Drive, St. Joseph MI.

On International Survivors of Suicide Day each year, a unique network of healing conferences helps individuals and families who have lost someone to suicide connect with others to express and understand the powerful emotions they experience. Survivors of suicide loss from around the world come together for support, healing, and information.

The "Day of Healing for Bereavement After Suicide" broadcast will be shown at Lory’s Place as well as other sites around the world and there will be time for discussion afterward. The broadcast includes a blend of emotional support and information about resources for healing. “Veteran” survivors and mental health professionals address the questions that so many survivors face: Why did this happen? How do I cope? Where can I find support? Since many survivors also find it helpful to understand something about the science of suicide prevention and bereavement, the program also includes a brief presentation of research highlights by mental health professionals.

This event is open to the public – you do not have to be a participant at Lory’s Place to take part in the event.

International Survivors of Suicide Day is always the third Saturday in November and it was officially founded by a U.S. Senate resolution in 1999 through the efforts of Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, who lost his father to suicide. In recognition of the fact that suicide knows no geographic or national boundaries and sites are organized on every continent, AFSP’s program is called International Survivors of Suicide Day.

Hospice at Home also offers ongoing groups that meet during the evening for adults and children at Lory’s Place Grief Healing and Education Center. The groups include regularly scheduled age-appropriate support group sessions that allow children and adults to interact with peers who have suffered similar loss. Groups for children and adults who are anticipating a loss or who have experienced a loss through pregnancy are also available, as well as educational and workplace grief programs. All community bereavement services are provided free of charge thanks to local community contributions.

Hospice at Home, celebrating 30 years serving the community, is the non-profit local hospice focusing on the patient and family regardless of the patients' diagnosis, treatment choices, or ability to pay.  It provides quality care to people adjusting to living with a serious illness, as well as to people facing death, anticipating the death of a loved one, or healing their grief after the death of a loved one.  Hospice at Home places an emphasis on the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of those who need care and those receiving support services in Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and Allegan Counties. Extending this care, Lory’s Place, a bereavement and education center that builds hope and strength for every grieving family, is available to anyone in Southwest Michigan or Northern Indiana.
