Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- The holiday season in historic Corydon kicks off with a 26 year-old tradition: the “Light up Corydon” celebration on the Historic Corydon Square.  This year’s Light Up Corydon festivities kick off at noon and will immerse guests with holiday entertainment, carriage rides, a visit from Santa and the grand finale of the unveiling of the lights. The ambiance and atmosphere of this old-fashioned Christmas is the perfect way to welcome this year’s holiday season. Complete visitor’s information is available at www.thisisindiana.org.

The popular Winter Wine Walk returns on December 17, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Shop the locally-owned downtown businesses while sampling wines from twelve local wineries and take in the sights and sounds of the season. Admission is $10.

Visitors love taking advantage of the opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping as they browse many of the unique, local shops during the Merchant’s Open House. Spirits are always bright after a visit to the Governor’s house for Christmas with the Hendricks, as they sip on refreshments and discover a tour and a taste of a Regency-style Christmas. After his initial visit, Santa will return to the Corydon Capital Building every weekend for pictures and visits.

Corydon is filled with numerous seasonal events. The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever runs from Dec. 2 through Dec. 18 at the Hayswood Theatre. Derby Dinner Playhouse features a kid-friendly buffet and a one hour musical of A Velveteen Rabbit Christmas, Nov. 19, 25, 26 and Dec. 3, 10, 17.  The 4th annual Holiday Gift Show is Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. offering various booths with handmade items, Amish items, baked goods, flowers, hand crafts, outdoor items and more.

Beyond these festive holiday events, Corydon offers travelers an incredible collection of historic sites and attractions.  Visitors marvel at the natural wonders of the historic Marengo Caves, a National Natural Landmark where enormous passages are highlighted by dazzling formations and crystals.  The State Historic Site marks Corydon’s place as Indiana’s first capitol.

Travelers also enjoy touring the Leora Brown School, one of the nation’s oldest standing early African American schoolhouses, and visiting the Constitution Elm site, under which Indiana delegates met to draft the state’s first constitution.  Visitors will also find plenty of diverse lodging options in the area, including a historic bed and breakfast, affordable modern hotels and even a riverboat casino.   Complete visitor information and a free visitors guide is available at www.thisisIndiana.org or calling (888) 738-2137.
