About 60 per cent of freight and 87.4 per cent passenger traffic is carried by road. Although NationalHighways constitute only about 1.7 per cent of the road network; it carries 40 per cent of the total roadTraffic.

Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- National highway Development project has implemented in phases wise & improving of more than about 54,500 km ofmajor routs of National Highway Network to international Standards which includes

India currently having 3.34 million Km of road network with world’s 2nd largest, it is one of the costeffective & ideal mode of transportation for freight & passengers, road carry nearly 65% of freight & 85% ofpassenger traffic.

Keeping in mind to build a target of 20 Km road per day (i.e. 7000 Km/year approximately) road MinisterShri C. P. Joshi has announced 7300km of contract in this fiscal year , worth about Rs. 57000 crores againstthe target of 10,000 Km & most of the contract planning to tendering under BOT (toll) projects. Governmenthas taken new Initiatives like

1. PPP concessions with operation, Maintenance & tolling having a target of 4000 km by 2012

2. NAHI has raise tax free bond worth Rs 10,000 crores

3. Implementing Electronic Toll collection (ETC)

4. GIS based satellite Imagery systems etc.

The NHDP which is being implemented in phases now looking to improve about 54500 km Major routes of national highway to meet international standards.
