SurfGeekTV Crew Filming SurferGirl Dairy Star Shelby Detmers in Oceanside

Oct. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Shelby Detmers will compete today in at the NSSA event in Oceanside, north of the pier. The central figure in a documentary film titled 'SurferGirl Diary: The Long Ride ', a deep dive documentary that follows the real world choices and struggles (both physically and emotionally) of Shelby Detmers during her senior year in high school. In a media culture where "what you look like matters more that who you are and what your are capable of", Shelby is sailing into a gathering perfect storm where the odds are not in her favor. Testing her 'whatever it takes' limits while 'balancing life' as she faces steep competition both between her ears and in the water, we chronicle Shelby's dreams to climb the ladder of success on the pro surfing tour.

In her last NSSA heat, Shelby lost out to friend and rival Kulia Doherty. Doherty also competing today, recently experienced the trauma and tragedy of losing her father, Michael Doherty who died suddenly and unexpectedly earlier this month.

It remains to be seen who will prevail today during this friendly but developing rivalry between two talented athletes.

The surf conditions in Oceanside today are waist to chest high glassy bumps. No wind to speak of this morning.
