Situated within an open palm forest on the shores of Lake Nzerakera in the Selous Game Reserve is the 13-tent Selous Safari Camp. The huge lake supports a myriad of birdlife and the largest crocodile and hippo population in Africa. Guests at the camp are able to take a leisurely boat safari on the lake and the nearby Rufiji River, getting closer to these mysterious creatures than would ever be possible from land, before enjoying a sundowner on the darkening water as fish eagles hunt overhead.
Located north-west of the Selous Game Reserve, the Ruaha National Park is a semi-arid wilderness and home to the boutique, eight-tent Jongomero Camp which resides on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero River. In the dry season the wisest of Africa’s beasts come into their own, finding water in the most remarkable of places. On a walking safari and even from the comfort of their private veranda, guests can frequently see elephant digging for water in the sand river bed, finding abundant fresh water for their herd.
The antithesis of the hot, untamed bush region, Ras Kutani is an exclusive retreat on the windswept shores of southern Tanzania. Offering a true castaway experience with long stretches of unspoilt white-sand beaches, wild, white water perfect for body-boarding and a millpond-still lagoon for canoeing, Ras Kutani is the ideal place to round-off a safari adventure. There’s the chance to see dolphins, whales, turtles hatching (in season) and even a shipwreck.
Africa Odyssey (www.africaodyssey.com / 020 7471 8780) is offering a nine-night safari and beach adventure in Tanzania from £4,450 per person (saving £771 per person). Available for selected departures throughout 2012, the price includes flights from Heathrow with British Airways, internal transfers, three nights at Jongomero Camp and three nights at the Selous Safari Camp with game viewing drives in open sided 4x4 vehicles, concession and park entrance fees, plus three nights at the beach retreat of Ras Kutani, all on a full-board basis.
