Oct. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- While Diwali is celebrated as a festival of lights, most people celebrate it as a festival of crackers with deafening noises, extreme air pollution which proves disastrous to ones health. Unsupervised handling of firecrackers especially by children proves hazardous at times and such practices are very risky. Injuries that occur in children may have long lasting physical and psychological consequences.

"Every Diwali, Unfortunately We see at least 3-4 cases of severe eye injuries and plenty more of minor eye injuries" says Dr Saravana Kodandapani, Medical Director- Sri Venkateshwara Nethralaya, Bangalore.  At his hospital, Dr Saravana treats these cases and he also says that most of his patients are from well to do and educated families. He is also sure that other eye specialists must be seeing similar cases which is turning into a nightmare for families affected by Firecracker injuries. This year, surprisingly, 2 cases have already appeared at his centre even before Diwali has started. Sadly, both the cases were bystanders and Dr Saravana Kodandapani says that 40% of all Firecracker injuries occur to innocent bystanders.

What can one do to prevent injuries?
"While Adults must guide and supervise children at all times, Even Adults must refrain from using new or unfamiliar firecrackers. Always wear Protective Eye Goggles and Never try and demonstrate bravado with  firecrackers even if they are perceived to be mild" says Dr Sukanya, Consultant Opthalmologist.

What can one do in case of an injury?
"Attempt to irrigate and flush the eye with clean water, Do not rub your eyes and seek an opinion of an eye specialist immediately. Timely intervention by an experienced practitioner will limit the burns and help in faster recovery" says Dr Sukanya  who is also a practicing eye specialist at Manipal Speciality Hospital.
