Oct. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- IRVINE, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2011) — The University of California, Irvine Extension today announced a webinar titled, “Science Fiction and Science Fact Information Session.”  Presented by award-winning UC Irvine physics professor, Michael Dennin, the webinar is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT.

The webinar, based on an internationally-recognized UCI undergraduate course, Physics 12: Science Fiction and Science Fact, examines the separation between “fact” from “fiction” using case studies drawn from human experiences, including superheroes, movies, and real world issues such as global warming.  Professor Dennin has appeared on numerous television shows on the History channel, including Batman Tech, Superman Tech, StarWars Tech and the Ancient Alien series.

Available the first time ever in winter quarter, this fully online, instructor-led course will be available to non-UCI students on an open enrollment basis.  “Offering open enrollment for online UCI courses such as this allows the University to serve specific student populations and members of the general public who are seeking to experience firsthand a UC-level undergraduate course,” said Dr. Jia Frydenberg, Associate Dean at the UC Irvine Distance Learning Center (DLC).  “The webinar will give participants a sample of what will be covered in the course so they can experience what an actual UCI online course is all about.”

The full-length course  may be of special interest to prospective transfer students looking to satisfy general education and lower division requirements, community college students in need of a few extra classes or high school students interested in trying a college-level course. The course is scheduled from January 9 through March 23, 2012.

Registration is available starting November 4, 2011.  To register for the webinar, visit http://unex.uci.edu/services/events/#01042.  For more information about the course, contact Amanda Yngelmo at (949) 824-0697 or ayngelmo@uci.edu.
