Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Brandutainment™ pioneers O2 Media, welcomes the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRI), who lead the world toward a cure for diabetes.  Make sure to tune in to “The Balancing” on Lifetime, October 27th, at 7:00am (ET/PT) for the kick off of the ‘Living with Diabetes’ series.  This informative series which is a part of the ‘myHealth’ edition of “The Balancing Act,” will air throughout November and December 2011.

The DRI is unique in the world of diabetes – it is uniquely structured to conduct research from the lab all the way to patients, plus the focus being singularly on a cure is unique.  In this special series, “The Balancing Act” viewers are educated on diabetes, prevention and treatments.

Insulin is not a cure for diabetes and trying to manage normal blood sugar levels is a difficult and delicate “balancing act.”  “Appearing on “The Balancing Act” is a great opportunity to talk about how the DRI was created for one reason – to cure diabetes – which is and will continue to be its singular focus until that goal is reaches,” says Robert A, Pearlman, President and CEO of the DRI.  “As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to shrink the timeline toward the discovery of a biological cure for this disease.  A biological cure would mean giving patients back the ability to naturally produce their own insulin.”

The DRI has already demonstrated that insulin production can be restored in patients living with the disease through its clinical islet transplantation trials. Now, DRI scientists are working to overcome the two over-arching areas necessary for eradicating this disease once and for all.

1) Retraining the immune system to accept the donor islets as “self” and reversing the autoimmune attack that caused diabetes in the first place.

2) Increasing the supply of insulin-producing cells– identifying, developing and/or regenerating a limitless supply of cells to sense blood sugar levels and produce insulin. Significant progress has already been made-- yet more work needs to be done.

Today, the DRI Foundation has grown into an international coalition of business leaders, families, scientists, clinicians, celebrities, and other concerned individuals. For the millions of families affected by diabetes, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure.
