Major infrastructure providers are already signed up.
By: Damien Wells “Modularity and containerisation are key concepts for the commoditisation of data centres: They are also rapidly becoming the building blocks of cloud infrastructure – making possible the rapid build-out of new facilities or the refurbishment and upgrade of existing stock.” said George Rockett, co-founder of DatacenterDynamics. ”Given the high capital cost of this type of infrastructure it is imperative that the data centre community gets an opportunity to kick their tyres, so to speak”. Containerised solutions, which include power, cooling and IT modules, are offered by an increasing number of IT and data centre infrastructure vendors. In part, they provide an answer to the uncertainties which beset facility life, e.g., the speed at which IT evolves compared to the speed at which data centres can be developed. In today’s market, containers are one way in which companies can scale physical infrastructure to meet the high density needs of private Cloud environments. Recently, high profile data centre users including Google and Microsoft have piloted facilities using containerised components. “Six manufacturers have already committed to displaying their containerised solutions in the Technology Park,” said George Rockett. “Visitors to DatacenterDynamics Converged in London can expect to see latest developments by Active Power and IBM, as well as major new product introductions for EMEA by Schneider Electric.” The recently completed Data Center Industry Census, a survey of 5400 individuals involved in the data centre industry, identifies modularity as a key technology trend 2011 – 2012. Containerisation in part facilitates this trend, enabling lower cost and easy to deploy data centre solutions, which are also simple to operate to achieve high efficiency and low PUE. Plant supplied in ISO shipping containers is perhaps the most widely recognised form, although skid-mounted equipment and modular building infrastructure are also included. As a peer-led conference, DatacenterDynamics Converged is able to objectively consider the benefits of factory engineered, modular solutions from the point of view of scalability, ease, speed and cost of deployment and transportability.
