According to reports from the Daily Telegraph, Manjit Bhamra, an orthopaedic surgeon, faces 85 legal complaints from patients.
The hospital trust where he works has already paid out settlements worth a total of £1 million, but may now have to pay more if he is found to have worked negligently with other patients.
He has been accused of a range of mistakes, from leaving a patient in her 50s with one leg longer than the other and in severe pain to giving a 23-year-old the wrong hip implant, which left the young person disabled for life.
Another complainant is Wayne Pickering, 59, who had his pelvis fractured during hip surgery back in 2006. He explained that when he awoke following the procedure, Mr Bhamra told him: "'I've nicked your artery, damaged the nerve and broken your pelvis' – not the words you want to hear."
The sciatic nerve damage has led to Mr Pickering being in constant pain and unable to walk without crutches. Pain relief medication causes short-term memory loss.
Commenting on the news, Eddie Jones, head of the Clinical Negligence department at Manchester-based law firm JMW said: "It's sad that so many people continue to have complaints about the work of professionals you trust to have a certain level of competence. Although this is just one person being accused in this instance, we know through our long history of working with clinical negligence victims that things like this continue to happen across the UK.
"We would advise anyone who thinks they have been mistreated or not afforded an adequate level of care by a medical professional to seek assistance from a specialist solicitor as soon as possible. Such mistakes like this can have a terrible effect on a victim's life, and it is up to them to then try and achieve justice through the legal system."
