Oct. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- The growing public awareness of the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids has resulted in many health conscious consumers to take fish oil supplements.

Fish oils are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids and they are marketed by dozens of different nutritional supplement companies.

According to Kevin Lee, editor and Health Reporter of Healthy-Oil-Planet.com, "While fish oils provide many health benefits, some of these products are not thoroughly monitored for purity and contaminants."

He adds, "Many consumers may be unwillingly ingesting rancid, low quality fish oils that may contain higher than acceptable levels of mercury, PCB's, dioxins and other contaminants.  Eating rancid oils, along with these potentially toxic ingredients, may cause upset stomachs, indigestion and gas."

One of the buzz words in the fish oil industry is 'pharmaceutical-grade' fish oils.  Kevin says, "Using a pharmaceutical-grade product may help ensure you're using a product that meets some type of minimal standards for purity and omega 3 concentrations."

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) has a Fish Oil Monograph that sets an internationally accepted standard on specific limits for product quality and purity.  Lee adds, "The CRN believes that any fish oil that meets or exceeds these standards is qualified to use the term 'pharmaceutical grade'.  However, this doesn't mean the CRN has the authority or power to stop a manufacturer from using this term because it isn't trademarked."

Lee recommends,"If possible, determine if the company that manufactured the product provides a Certificate of Analysis.  Many reputable companies have third-party laboratories analyze their fish oils for omega 3 levels and contaminants."

Another method to determine the purity of your fish oil is by using IFOS fish oils.  Kevin says, "The term IFOS is an acronym for International Fish Oil Standards.  The IFOS is a Canadian company that uses third-party laboratories to analyze fish oil supplements from all over the world.  You can visit their website and see the actual test results of dozens of fish oil products."
