Oct. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Juno Beach, FL -- NextEra Energy, Florida Power & Light’s parent company, released its detailed 2011 Sustainability Report (http://www.nexteraenergy.com/pdf/sustain-report.pdf) to the public this week, which recorded the company’s lowest air emissions rates ever in 2010.

The record low emissions rate is due, in part, to the installation of state-of-the-art, combined-cycle natural gas turbines at several FPL power plant sites. Beyond cutting emissions, these investments have reduced fossil fuel costs for FPL customers since 2001 by approximately $5 billion, and FPL's typical residential customer bill continues to be the lowest of all 55 utilities in Florida and more than 20 percent below the national average.

FPL’s Director of Environmental Relations and Sustainability Amy Albury stated that the company’s sustainability efforts have led its emissions rates to be remarkably better than other energy companies, beating the U.S. electric power sector averages.

“Sustainability is a journey of continuous, incremental improvement - always moving from good to better, and from better to best,” said Albury. “It’s a commitment to the well-being of our customers, our neighborhoods and the planet we all call home.”

“At FPL, environmental excellence means being a responsible steward of Earth’s resources. These include the air, water and land we all enjoy. It also means being a careful conservator of life in all its forms, and the natural habitats and ecosystems that sustain it,” Albury continued.

For the seventh consecutive year, FPL received the prestigious ServiceOne Award for exceptional customer service, the only utility to win this award seven times. In recognition of the difficult economic times, FPL is championing initiatives to help customers and communities in need. These include long-standing, proven programs to help customers save energy and money, such as FPL’s free home and business energy-saving evaluations and “energy makeovers” for homes and nonprofit organizations.

According to Albury, sustainability also means investing in FPL’s approximately 10,000 employees. She said FPL is proud to offer programs ranging from dozens of health and wellness activities to a comprehensive ZERO Today! safety vision, to more than 1,000 courses in professional skills development at NextEra University.

“As you can tell, we are proud of the work we've done,” said Albury. “Our talented and hard working employees make it all happen.”
