Under the new Avios system, taxes and fuel surcharges will mean people will have to pay around an additional £300 for their flights, whereas with Airmiles these charges were included.

Airmiles bosses say that these charges are necessary due to an increase in UK Air Passenger Duty (APD), which they claim is now the most expensive in the world.

APD is a tax paid by an airline for each passenger they carry from the UK, costing them £24 for a flight from London to Europe and up to £170 for a flight to Australia. These charges are then passed onto the passenger.

With December being the deadline to spend your points, there is a lot of competition for the limited seats available on the popular flights, so you may not be able to get the holiday you require with your Airmiles.
