Follow on Google News | Cary Family Dental’s Dr. Allan Acton and Smile Makeover Recipient Featured in Cary MagazineCary publication features local dentist and reveals results of third annual dental makeover contest
By: Cary Family Dental In the Cary Magazine article entitled “Grin and Bare It”, writer Tara Croft says that Shields’ teeth were the cumulative result of bad experiences with an unprofessional dentist, teeth broken by dental mishaps, and bad fillings that quickly drained her oral care budget. Shields, a wife and mother of three, says that her teeth degraded even further after each of her pregnancies. Desperate for a solution, Shields sent a letter to ten dentists to see if any could offer her assistance. Luckily, one of those dentists was Dr. Acton. Dr. Acton opened Cary Family Dental in 2003 and since that time, has become one of the Triangle’s most accomplished and trusted dentists. Over the last three years, he has been voted “Best Cosmetic Dentist” in western Wake County by Cary Magazine readers. He has also graduated with honors from The Hornbrook Group’s distinguished national training program, completed training on the DuraTHIN veneer, and received a Fellowship Award from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). Cary Family Dental partnered with Cary Magazine in 2009 to offer the first of three subsequent Cary Smile Makeovers. Since that time, Dr. Acton estimates the total value of the makeovers to be close to $65,000. He says that the money and resources invested have been well worth it, especially when he is able to personally share the final result with the makeover’s recipient. “I really enjoy doing the Smile Makeover each year,” says Dr. Acton. “A smile is such a big part of a person’s life. I feel that if I can give a person back their smile then, in some small way, I have given them part of their life back. It’s why I decided to become a dentist and what continues to be the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my career.” Shields’ letter arrived at the Cary practice with just two days remaining in the contest. Soon after she submitted her photo and entry, her story quickly went viral and found its way onto MySpace and Twitter. After tens of thousands of votes, five dental appointments, and a brand-new beautiful smile, Shields says that when she talks to people, they are now looking at her rather than her mouth. With her newfound confidence, Shields now dreams of going to dental school and maybe one day getting the opportunity to help homeless children acquire dental care. She’s wants to pay her positive experience with Dr. Acton forward to assist those whose circumstances prevent them from getting the dental care they need.
